My name is Lydia Killoran, and I am the managing member of Merit Home Health Care/ I want to take this opportunity to specially thank you for considering our services and to share my personal story, which is the motivation involved in developing Merit Home Health Care.
I am the youngest of seven children. As my siblings aged and moved away, I realized that my parents weren’t in the best of health and they needed extra care. In 1989 I began a career in the in-home health care industry. This path gave me the opportunity to care for my parents while touching many other lives. The services of Merit Home Health Care allow my clients the ability to remain in their homes, aging with dignity and as independently as possible.
In 2004, my father was diagnosed with dementia. Well into their 70’s, my parents had maintained the highest level of independence possible with assistance in bathing, dressing and meal preparation. Our caregivers were the extra help that allowed my dad to remain at home another 10 years well into Stage 4 dementia. He passed in 2013. I am proud of the daily support offered by the staff of Merit and grateful that my mother still receives care today.
The kind of care my father needed attendance pension to cover would not have been available if my family had to pay the inflated prices that most private pay agencies charge. Fortunately, my parents qualified for a Veteran’s aid and their in-home care costs. Their story is a good one. But daily, our office phones ring with calls from people who don’t have options. Their income is slightly too high to qualify for Medicaid assistance. They don’t qualify for a Veteran’s pension. Yet they need help and can’t afford private pay rates.
I want to make a difference. I believe that good, quality in-home care can be provided at reasonable costs. This is my mission: I will spend the remainder of my career opening the door to continued independence for those who felt the door close on them before. By choosing us as your in-home agency you are another voice echoing our motto that in-home care should be affordable for everyone. Quality care is the key to aging at home with dignity.
